- Brooksville, Florida, Hernando County
In the early 1840's a military fort was constructed to aid in the protection of settlers from the Native American Indians, this fort was named Fort Desoto and was located in what is currently known as Brooksville, Florida. As the fort was built on top of a bed of lime rock, getting water was difficult to achieve. Due to this situation some of the settlers moved approximately 3 miles to the south forming a community known as Pierceville, while other settlers moved approximately 2 miles northwest and began a community known as Melendez. Brooksville, Fl grew from a meld of these two communities and was incorporated into a city and county seat by 1880. The area was named Brooksville in honor of South Carolina Representative, Preston Brooks. During the debate of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill in 1856, Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner angrily denounced the Senator of South Carolina, A.P. Butler, while he was absent from the Senate Chamber. Butler was an uncle of Preston Brooks and after the adjournment of the Senate Chamber, Brooks ran into Sumner and hit him in the head with his cane! This act won Brooks adoration throughout the southern states! Hernando County admired this man's devotion to his uncle and named the county's largest settlement in his honor. Once dubbed "the home of the tangerine", Brooksville, Florida, was considered a major citrus industry but did soon branch out it's industries to include rock mining, cattle and turpentine.
Built on seven hills, this area has the second highest elevation in the state of Florida, at approximately 220 feet above sea level.
