In 1946, a former U.S. Navy man, Newton Perry, found Weeki Wachee, Florida to be the perfect place to start a new business. In a year’s time, Perry had made his dream a reality.  He had built an 18 seated theatre that stood 6 feet underground, facing the beauty of the natural spring.  He then hired women and trained them to swim with air hoses and smile at the same time, to eat, drink and dance ballet while underwater! Voila! The birth of the Florida Mermaids began!  As Perry once trained frogmen to swim underwater during the 2nd World War, creating Mermaids seemed simple enough!  By the 1950's, Weeki Wachee became one of the nation's most popular stops for tourists.  In 1959, ABC (American Broadcasting Company) purchased Weeki Wachee and rebuilt the theatre to seat 500 and stand an extra 10 feet below the surface.  Weeki Wachee was incorporated in 1966, which inevitably put this minute city, with a population of 12, on the maps, making it one of the smallest cities in the nation and the only other incorporated city in the County of Hernando! Weeki Wachee is a Native American word name meaning "little spring" or "winding river".

At 403 feet deep, Weeki Wachee Springs is the deepest spring in the Nation with over 117 millions of crystal clear 72 degree water bubbling out of the spring everyday! The
Weeki Wachee River winds through 12 miles of water front homes, forests and parks right into the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. The river gives ample opportunities for paddling, boating, fishing, tubing, swimming and incredible glances at some of Florida Nature Coast’s wildlife.  The annual Weeki Wachee Swamp Fest is a weekend of food, arts and crafts vendors, live entertainment and Swamp Costume Contests.  Held annually in March, the Swamp Fest is unique fun for the whole family!

Relocating to Weeki Wachee provides a small town old Florida charm combined with history and nature, offering single family homes, land lot opportunities and waterfront properties.
